Four stonesto go.

The walker stands on a cairn four stones short. Every swap lays one stone where the price lands.

One trade, one stone. The capstoneburns it all.

This runs the rule on its own numbers; the real ones are set at deploy.

The record

The ridge, as the market built it.

Every finished cairn, drawn at its true shape, with its level, the blocks it took and what its capstone burned. The half-built ones stay where they are, at the height the crowd left them.

The reserve waits for the next capstone

Lichen grows on the lowest stones of a cairn started more than 180 of this page's blocks ago, and means nothing else. This runs the rule on its own numbers; the real ones are set at deploy.

The rule

Only turning up counts.

The price range is cut into levels, and every swap lays one stone on the level it lands in. A large trade and a small one lay the same stone, so only a crowd can finish a cairn. At its published height a cairn takes its capstone: the whole reserve buys $CAIRN and burns, and that level is closed for ever.

  1. 1

    The level

A fixed number of ticks, the same everywhere, set at deploy. Levels tile the whole range and never move: a level is an address, not a window.

  2. 2

    The stone

After every swap the hook reads the tick, finds its level and lays one stone there. The size of the swap and its side change nothing.

  3. 3

    The height

Every cairn is finished at the same published number of stones. No level is easier than another.

  4. 4

    The capstone

The swap that lays the last stone puts the capstone on: the whole reserve buys $CAIRN and burns, inside that transaction. Nobody is paid for it.

  5. 5

    Finished is finished

A capped level never takes another stone. Swaps there still pay the toll and lay nothing, and nothing can reopen it.

  6. 6

    The scree

A cairn that is never finished is never cleared. It stays at the height the crowd left it: the honest record of a level the market visited and left.

What the contracts enforce

Five lines, and no setter on any of them.

  • I1A swap lays exactly one stone, on exactly one level, or none if that level is finished.
  • I2A cairn's height never decreases, and a finished cairn never changes again.
  • I3The reserve leaves only as burned $CAIRN, and only when a capstone goes on.
  • I4No address has any right over the reserve, and no address is paid for laying a stone or for finishing a cairn.
  • I5The level width, the height and the toll are fixed at deployment and have no setter.

Every number is fixed at deployment and published on the law page. The team keeps nothing.

What can go wrong

Said now, so nobody finds it out later.

01The sharpest edge

A level can be finished by somebody else's swap at any moment, and it is then closed for ever.

A cairn that everyone is watching can take its last stone from anybody's swap, and after that the level lays nothing, whoever arrives next. It is the sharpest edge of the design and the direct result of its rule that finished is finished. Nobody can reopen the level, and there is no setter that could.

  1. Somebody splits one trade into a hundred to finish a cairn.

They can, and it is the intended way to build one: a hundred swaps pay a hundred tolls and a hundred lots of gas, and what they buy is a burn that belongs to everybody. The only way to build a cairn is to turn up again and again.

  2. Dust swaps.

A swap of one unit lays the same stone as any other. The toll makes it cost something, not much, so the height and the toll are set together before anything is deployed.

  3. A market that never comes back.

No cairn is ever finished, the reserve fills and nothing happens. It is the honest failure state, and the page shows the tallest half-built cairn and how far it is from its capstone, not only the total burned.

  4. The ridge grows for ever.

Finished cairns are never cleared, so the record only grows. The contract keeps a count and a block for each level; the pages page through the rest.
